Examples of Craig Communications work are provided below. The majority of these projects involved extensive regulatory interactions with federal and state agencies including the US EPA, DTSC, Water Board, Dept. of Fish and Game, BCDC as well as a host of local agencies and stakeholders.

Community Outreach for Utility Company’s Manufactured Gas Plant Cleanup Program

Developed and implemented public affairs and risk communications strategy for the investigation and remediation of 41 former manufactured gas plant sites located in urban areas throughout Northern and Central California for a major utility provider. Work included development of programmatic and project specific communications strategies and plans; developed risk communication strategy; developed supporting collateral materials including facts sheets, work notices, brochures, website content, presentations; developed media material including standby statements, key messages, talking points, and press releases; conducted public meetings/workshops/open houses/site tours/briefings; fulfilled all DTSC and Water Board public participation requirements including conducting community surveys, interviews, preparing community profiles and public participation plans, and community meetings and hearing; provided outreach staff in the field during remediation; prepared crisis communications plans and respond to project issues; agency interface and negotiation; executed local hire program to support projects in remediation; developed charitable contributions that intersected with the project; developed and deployed an educational curriculum for schools where project sites were located.


Community Outreach for School District Bond Reconstruction Program

Provided public relations and community outreach services to support the reconstruction of 18 elementary, three middle and three high schools with a primary goal of increasing community awareness and supporting future construction bonds in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Work included development of programmatic communications strategy; preparation of collateral materials; public meetings/open houses/site tours/presentations/briefings; execution of local hire program; media packages and interface.

 

Community Outreach for Airport Master Plan/Expansion

Developed and implemented a communications program to involve the local community in the master planning process for the expansion of two general aviation airports in Contra Costa County. Work included development of communications strategy; stakeholder identification and assessment interviews; preparation of all collateral materials including press releases, fact sheets, newsletters; formation and facilitation of community and technical advisory panels to guide planning process.

 

Community Outreach for Cleanup of Residential Backyards Contaminated with Hazardous Chemicals

Provided all community outreach services in support of the cleanup of 23 residential backyards in a low-income, primarily Hispanic community in West Oakland. Work was completed over a period of five years and each yard had to be cleaned up three separate times due to new investigative findings. Work was completed with no legal action or unflattering press.

 
Community Outreach for Cleanup and Redevelopment of Former Chemical Facility

Provided all public outreach and education services in support of the cleanup and redevelopment of a former recycling facility in the Bay Area. Developed a comprehensive communications plan to foster and maintain open communications with the community at large and facilitated informed community input on the cleanup and future redevelopment; worked with the City Redevelopment Agency and Planning Commission to develop a realistic real estate and redevelopment strategy; facilitated a Community Advisory Panel; and developed and issued project fact sheets, press releases and other project communiqués.

 

Community Outreach for Utility Company Power Plant and Utility Sites Portfolio

Largest Residential/Commercial Redevelopment Project in Oakland

Responsible for providing public participation for the environmental aspects of the Oak-to-9th redevelopment including in-person meetings with community/environmental/social groups to discuss the investigation and cleanup of the Oak-to-9th site and determine and prioritize community concerns; writing a communication strategy; created communication pieces to explain the technical aspects of cleanup including fact sheets, project postcards and work notices; arranging site tours and community meetings.

 

Public Outreach for PCE Plume Investigation and Cleanup

Developed and executed community relations strategy in support of the investigation and cleanup of this three mile long solvent plume located underneath a residential community that uses well water for domestic purposes. When the plume was discovered, a community of 63 residences were using well water for domestic purposes and had been exposed to low-levels of solvents in the groundwater for over 30 years. Worked with the community to install treatment systems on wellheads to stop immediate exposure to contaminated groundwater. Developed strategy to gain community acceptance installation of a forced water supply within the community. Outreach involved conducting community interviews; holding a series of community meetings and workshops; working with state and local regulatory agencies; press interface.

 

Community Outreach for Alternative Truck Route

Developed communications strategy for the development of an alternative route for trucks traveling through North Richmond. The community proposed and everyone accepted developing a route that engineers had not considered.

 

Public Participation for Naval Air Base

Provided public participation support for the investigation and cleanup of the 2,000 acre former Alameda Naval Air Base.

 

Public Participation for Specific Plans

Provided public participation services for the development of specific plans for North Richmond, Rodeo, Martinez, East Palo Alto and Pleasant Hill.
